
No. 11/10 ÈȵãºÚÁÏ Out-Hit No. 2/1 Sooners but Drop Doubleheader
NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 11/10 South Carolina softball team (20-3, 0-3) out-hit No. 2/1 Oklahoma (22-0, 3-0) in both games of their doubleheader Sunday (Mar. 9), but it wasn’t enough as the ÈȵãºÚÁÏ fell 10-9 and 2-1.
Carolina out-hit the Sooners 14-to-8 in the opener and 3-to-2 in game two.
Seven different ÈȵãºÚÁÏ had two hits on the day. Ella Chancey led the way with four RBIs, while Abigail Knight and Natalie Heath each drove home two. Heath also scored a pair of runs.
GAME 1
The Sooners jumped out to an early lead with three straight homers in the bottom of the first. South Carolina responded in the top of the second with two of their own. On the second pitch of the inning, Knight connected on her second home run of the season. Three pitches later with was Heath with her third of the season to straight away center.
After Oklahoma got a run back in the third, the ÈȵãºÚÁÏ took the lead in the fourth. The first three batters of the inning reached on a walk and a pair of singles. Ella Chancey delivered her first home run of the season, a grand slam, to center. Carolina wasn’t done, as Blankenship singled and Lexi Winters walked. Knight capped it off, bringing home Blankenship on a sacrifice fly to center.
South Carolina added to the lead in the fifth. A two-out walk to Arianna Rodi brought Chancey to the plate. Her single to the right got by the OU fielder, allowing pinch runner Chloe Lackey to score from first. The Sooners responded with a three-run home run in the bottom half of the inning to regain the lead.
The ÈȵãºÚÁÏ tied it again in the sixth on Health’s second home run of the day. It was her first career multi-home run game.
Carolina got the winning run into scoring position in the seventh but were unbale to bring the runner home. Oklahoma took advantage of a pair of walks to score the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
Sam Gress (3-1) took the loss, allowing one run on one hit in 2 1-3 innings of relief.
GAME 2
Oklahoma got out in front, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first with two outs. That would be the only runs allowed by the ÈȵãºÚÁÏ, holding the Sooners without a hit the rest of the way. Carolina held OU to a season-low in runs and hits.
South Carolina’s lone run came on a solo home run by Rodi in the top of the fourth. She now has 10 on the season, which is already tied for eighth most in a single season in program history.
Jori Heard took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits in five innings of work. She struck out three and at one point retired 13 in-a-row. Gress threw the final inning and didn’t allow a hit.
The two hits surrendered to OU are its fewest in 40 games (Apr. 27, 2024).
The ÈȵãºÚÁÏ return home to host Coastal Carolina Wednesday at 6 p.m.
